Chapter 9 Companion

The Goal-Setting Companion

Before you chase a goal, get clear on what you actually want and why. Work through this in order, or jump to the piece you need. Everything here is yours to fill in and keep.

Step 1

Your Why

The big why behind your life drives most of what you do. Knowing it renews your passion and connects you to your purpose, and it makes every goal easier to choose. Let's find it.

Example. I want a team of coaches. Why? To expand my reach. Why? To help more people. Why? Because people can live full lives without burnout. Why? Because burnout causes real suffering. Why? Because everyone deserves a fulfilling life.

Step 2

Your Principles

Principles are enduring guidelines for how you live. They form early and rarely change. A quick test: how would you feel doing the exact opposite? If that feels wrong, you have found one. Keep your values and goals from ever contradicting them.

Step 3

Your Values

Values are what matters to you right now. Unlike principles, they shift across the seasons of your life. Knowing your current values makes goals, schedules, and every yes or no far easier.

Step 4

The Road Map

Now zoom out. Before you lock in a single goal, get clear on the bigger picture: what matters to you and where you are headed.

Your SMART Goals

Now, and only now, make it concrete. Take everything above and turn it into one specific goal, test it against SMART, and break it into action. This is where the whole process lands.

S

Specific

Well defined. Nail down the who, what, where, when, and why.

M

Measurable

Have a way to track progress, so you know the moment you arrive.

A

Attainable

Realistic and reasonably within reach for you now.

R

Relevant

Aligned with your why, your purpose, and your values.

T

Timely

It has a deadline, and now is a good time to pursue it.
